JANICE AILEEN WINDSOR

September 16, 1943 – October 2, 2025

We sadly announce the peaceful passing of Janice Aileen Windsor on October 2, 2025, in Riverview Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Janice is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dennis; her daughter Heather (Chuck) Squires; her son Richard; and her grandchildren, Paynter, Eric, and Alex. She is fondly remembered by her brother, Lorne DeJaeger (Audrey); and sister Lorraine Powelson (Dennis); as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Jean DeJaeger.

Janice was born in Winnipeg in September, 1943, and went to school in West Kildonan. She was employed as an engineering draftsman for the Manitoba Telephone system before and after she raised her family. She also worked as a draftsman at Red River College and for the Canadian Wildlife Service, as well as serving as a clerk at Mappins Jewelry for a few years.

Janice met Dennis Windsor at a Canada Land Inventory training camp in 1967; they were married in 1969. Janice and Dennis raised their family in Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Oakbank, M.B. When Dennis retired, they resided in Lumby, B.C. and then Vernon in the Okanagan Valley for 15 years. In 2019 they returned to the Whyte Ridge community in Winnipeg because Janice wanted to visit with her old friends while everyone was able to enjoy each other’s company. Unfortunately, that plan was sidelined by Covid and by the evolution of Janice’s cancer.

Janice had life-long strong opinions about cleanliness, fashion, behavior, and personal privacy. She thoroughly enjoyed travelling with Dennis to business events throughout Canada as well as taking trips to Hong Kong, Mexico, and Las Vegas with friends and family. A highlight of her life were her years in Job’s Daughters as a member, then as a mother, as Heather rose to the highest ranks of that organization. Janice loved friendly animals; in the early summer of 2025 she sustained her social relations by giving treats to more than 70 neighborhood dogs in her yard.

Janice’s cancer was identified in 2015 but remained dormant until 2021. Over the next four years, she underwent continuous intravenous and/or medicinal chemotherapy programs, as directed by Cancer Care Manitoba. She suffered numerous side-effects; always believing she would beat the disease. She was truly grateful for the kind and professional attention provided by the staff at Cancer Care, Palliative Home Care, and Riverview Hospital Palliative Care.

Donations may be made in Janice’s memory to any charity of your choice supporting cancer research or cancer care.

Janice’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Janice was enthusiastic and determined; always ready for a new experience. She loved to drive and shop and even going to Winfield for that special loaf of bread. And she had a great sense of fashion. She was the first person to welcome us to Oakbankwith a pie and local newspaper. She was courageous in her fight with cancer with Dennis by her side. Our sincere sympathy to Dennis and the family.

Our sincere condolences to the family. We will treasure our memories of meeting Janice at the Winnipeg Canoe Club, sharing the joy of attending Janice and Dennis's wedding and the many dinners we shared when we lived in Winnipeg. Janice was always there for a hearty laugh and a good chat. She was the eternal optimist.

I have many memories of one of my best friends, Janice Windsor. We were friends from West Kildonan where we went to school together. Our family were friends as well, where we attended the same Church - Kildonan United. Janice and I attended Young Peoples, and we were both Sunday School Teachers at that Church. After Church Janice and I along with other friends, went to Bert's Coffee Shop for fries and a soda. Doug Young, the Minister, at Kildonan United married both Janice and Denis, and Don and myself at that Church. Janice was my Maid of Honour in our wedding party. During that time, Janice and I had many similar interests. Our first babies were born on the same year, Heather was Janice's first born and David was our first child. We rejoiced in the birth of Rick their second child. We enjoyed Rick's visit to our home where he showed us his first car. We shared many times together during that part of our life.

Our first job for Janice and myself was at Manitoba Telephones, where Janice and I walked from Eatons to the Bay, along Portage Ave., after work on a friday night, when we both had our hair done, and where we had dinner together at the Paddle Wheel, at the Bay. Another memory, was doing ceramics, with Janice at her next door neibour's house.

Upon their return to Winnipeg, 6 years ago, Janice and I enjoyed, some outings together shopping. However, when she was confined during her illness, we were able to connect by phone many times, with maybe a quick door visit. I will miss my friend of many years, but I will rejoice in the many great memories that we shared together.

My best memeries was when I took my husband Lloyd & grand son & my brother Ted. We all had great times. Another time I went to Burnby, B.C., she try driving over a curb, never made it. Not too much damage to the car, another time walking around town in flip flops after getting a Manny Penny. There too any many fun things to remember. These are my memeries from her, who was a fighter. Love cousin in law Ginny.
