WERNER WOLKE

1944-2020

Werner passed away at his home in Winnipeg on August 31, 2020 at the age of 76.

He leaves to mourn his passing sons Mark (Sherrie) and Jeff (Melissa) and grandsons Eoghan and Hayden, as well as his wife Mary and good friends Hans and Marita Rasing and Norman Frost. He is survived by his family in Germany:  sister Ruth and brothers Helmut and Jürgen along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Werner was born in Hötensleben, Germany on January 30th, 1944. In 1966 he emigrated to Canada and came to Winnipeg, where he met and married Mary Iverson in 1968. As their family grew, Werner worked at several places, including up in the Northwest Territories, at the Manitoba Sugar plant and eventually at the University of Manitoba. He retired several years ago. He enjoyed gardening and always had something growing in the back yard. He was also an enthusiastic cyclist and walker and was a familiar sight in his Wolseley neighbourhood. Riding his bike or walking through the area, he came in contact with many people and always offered a friendly greeting.

Werner was a very talented man and could repair or build almost anything. He did several renovations to his home as well as at the trailer in Camp Neustadt, where the family passed many happy summers. He was very generous with his time and would help anyone who requested it. He was a member of the German Society of Winnipeg for 50 years and served as Lagerleiter at Camp Neustadt for several years, keeping everything in top shape with his expert maintenance.

In keeping with Werner’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private celebration of his life will be held. Werner’s ashes will be returned to Germany when conditions allow. In the meantime, his family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages anyone who wishes to make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Werner’s name.

Rest in Peace. You will be greatly missed!

So sorry to hear of Werner's passing. I was privileged to get to know him only in the last number of years. I used to tease him that he would live longer than I would because he was in much better shape. We both happened to be the same age. I got to know him when he would come to Arborg to work on his property here. I appreciated him for his knowledge, skill and ability to tackle almost any job. I will certainly miss him, he was a good friend to me. When we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary back in 2015, he and a friend made an extra trip to come to Arborg to celebrate with us. We appreciated that so much. Our condolences to the family.

I was saddened this evening when I heard Werner had passed. I considered Werner a Neighbourhood friend. I met Werner a few years back walking on the River. We had many conversations often crossing paths on Wolseley Ave, Wellington Crescent, Omand's Creek, by the fire I often have going on the river in the winter. We talked about Skiing, cycling, kids, the serenity of the river trail in the winter, my dogs ,the dogs he would sometimes walk for people in the neighbourhood.  In life, especially in these strange times it is always nice to talk to people who give you hope and belief in your fellow human being's, Werner was one of those people. I will miss our talks. My condolences to all his family members. Dave Barclay

Werner and I crossed paths a few years back when we both worked in Physical Plant at the University of Manitoba. We were both commuter cyclists (although he had a much longer daily ride than I) and often chatted in the locker room at the beginning or end of the day. He had an easy way about him, and I looked forward to running into him on campus. He was a welder by trade, but it was evident he had the mind of an expert craftsman and artist. We worked on a job together once, and he taught a young project manager a thing or two. Upon his retirement, he was missed at work. I am saddened to hear of his passing - condolences to his family. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and have several conversations with Werner.  He did indeed help us with our bathtub installation and I will be forever thankful for his help.  It is always a pleasure to meet nice people and have some of their positive characteristics rub off on me.

So very sorry to hear of Werner's passing.  We knew him for a long time and had the best memories at Camp Neustadt.  He was very kind and caring towards my dear parents and when Mom passed, he was a great friend to my Dad.  He had a unique sense of humour and shared some of the funniest German songs around the campfire.  Our sincere condolences to all family members and Marita and Hans.

I knew Werner only casually as we often saw each other walking. He was kind and loved both my dog and grandson. So sorry for his loss.

I have been running the loop of Wolseley and Wellington Crescent for over 20 years and was often passed Werner on his walks. We would always greet each other warmly and in the winter would congratulate ourselves on how hardy we were. We never spoke more than a few words but I will miss his presence on my runs. My condolences to his friends and family.
