GERALD ERIC WONG

October 18, 1929 - September 3, 2023

With heavy hearts, we announce that Gerald passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023 at the age of 93.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his daughter Pamela and husband Hal in Orlando, Florida, daughter Debra and husband Dale, son Garry and wife Masako in Richmond, BC, daughter Donna and partner Pilar, daughter Tanis and husband Mark in Nanaimo, BC, daughter Tracy and husband Steve and Tom who was like a second son to Gerald. He also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gerald was predeceased by his wife Marion and his daughter Kimberley.

Gerald was born in Brantford, Ontario and grew up in Dundas, Ontario graduating from Westdale High School in Hamilton, Ontario. Gerald started working for Remington Rand/Univac Canada in 1951. He worked on all sorts of equipment from mechanical machines to vacuum tube machines to large main frame computers. Gerald often had to go on course in different cities to learn about the new machines he would be looking after and would come home and tell many stories about his time away. His favourite place seemed to be Princeton, New Jersey. His last job thanks to Steve Haines was shuttling cars for Avis Rent-a-Car. He truly loved going to work and engaging with other employees and best of all driving new cars. If he had to pick up a car in a different city he’d think of it as an adventure to see somewhere new and a chance to strike up a conversation with someone in a truck stop café.

He had a passion for fixing things whether it be cars or houses, he could fix or repair anything, and would look at something and figure out how to make it better than before. He grew up in the depression and knew what lean times were all about. He would never throw anything away that he thought could be fixed; “Besides you might need the part someday”. One of his greatest joys was his annual drive to Dundas, Ontario with his good friend Eugene Karpetz to visit his parents and repair their restaurant equipment when he had his summer holidays. Over the years Gerald managed to visit his sister Frances in Hong Kong, and visited Japan, and Hawaii.

He was good friends with all his neighbours and was more than willing to help them in any way possible. He lived the life he wanted to the very end. Many thanks to Steven Haines and Dale Michasiw for all the assistance they afforded him with his daily living near the end of his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday September 27, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian facility).

In lieu of flowers Gerry's preference would be to take a friend or your family out for dinner.

Gerald's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

As a new kid on the block,  I became neighbourhood friends with Tanis & Tracy.  I had wonderful experiences playing with them and visiting their home and interacting with Mr and Mrs Wong.  They were so friendly and welcoming! I had missed my friendship with Tannis & Tracy but as a kids, lots change, we grow and go on different paths of life! While visiting my parents I would see Mr Wong out in his yard or chat with a neighbour!   My condolences to all of Mr Wong’s Family and friends!        ~Sharilee Ahoff,  childhood friend to youngest Wong Children  (my brother Morgan has been out in Vancouver (Kitsilano) last 20 ish years

Strange I just had a memory of Gerry and google him and found he had just passed away.   Gerry was one of a kind, great guy.  I met him at the MLCC, just like Bill and Cindy.   Wish I had stayed in touch but life marches on.  Gerry couldn’t do enough for you and always wanted to help with whatever.   Rest in peace you earn it.

My name is Lara Coombs, I have known Tracy his daughter for almost 40 years.  Tom Coombs is my brother.  I have heard so many stories of Gerry's adventures for years.  He was the man who could fix everything.  He spent many hours working on cars with my brother!  He loved to share his stories and always had a smile on his face.  He fixed my hot water tank in my trailer at the lake.  No one could fix it, in 10 minutes he fixed it!  His funny stories will continue to be shared by his family and friends.  My thoughts go out to Tracy, Steve, Adi and Alyssa.  Also to Tom my brother whom Gerry was like a father to him.   ❤

We’ve known Gerry for over thirty-five years. Throughout that time Gerry and Tom would spend hours working on old cars, air conditioners, renovations, etc. He could fix anything; once at the cottage Gerry rewired an old Moffat stove, era 1940’s, a mouse had chewed the wires during the winter months, of course he fixed it! Gerry took up windsurfing at the lake at the age of sixty-three. Our dog Shadow, would circle around him, it was quite the scene! Gerry would often appear with various grandchildren in tow, delighting in their company.  He would drive up to the lake with Nathan in Tom’s old red Fiat, we have many great memories of those times.  We’ve had many restaurant dinners with Gerry over the years. He was a great storyteller and always interested in hearing others stories.  He was a friend to all, accepting of everyone he met.  We shall miss him very much.  Deanne Coombs.

We met Gerry when he worked on the Univac computer (armed with his handy hammer and credit card to fix the computer) at the Liquor Commission and we worked there as computer operators.  He was the kindest, most generous and funny man!  Any problems seemed to just slide off him like water off a duck's back.  True to form he took us out to dinner and regaled us with many hilarious stories and of course insisted on paying for our meals.  A truly wonderful, amazing man and Bill and I send his family and friends our deepest sympathies for your loss.  A life well lived and we are blessed to have known him. ❤
