Where do you start to honor the life of a beautiful person who loved and was loved by so many?

Maureen was the daughter of Bill and Thora McCaine; she grew up in Fort Garry with her older sister Leslie. They spent their summers with older cousins at Winnipeg Beach on 1st Ave.

Maureen was adored and cherished by her husband Jim. They built a rich and meaningful life together, including many fantastic friends and a large family unit. They played golf and Scrabble together, frequented their timeshare in Missouri, hosted endless dinners, and traveled with many friends to interesting destinations.

Maureen led a fulfilling career teaching Art, English, and History for over 30 years in the Louis Riel school division, followed by 15 years of substitute teaching at Fort Richmond Collegiate and Oak Park High School. Her early career began at Darwin School where she joined the Daughters of Darwin group which developed into lifelong friendships.

Maureen was intensely creative and gave many gifts of her handmade cards, stained glass art, pottery, paper flowers, and fabric landscapes. She also danced and swam competitively, read a book a week, took clogging classes, and worked out at the gym until she was no longer able to. She was always growing and learning and trying something new.

Maureen was so much more than an "Auntie Moe", rather cherished as a second-mom to her beloved Erin and Steve. She was very involved with their children, Xavier, Brynja, Maya, and Audrey. Maureen also loved her four stepdaughters; Dana, Margo, Trisha, and Ashley like they were her own. She adored her 11 grandchildren as their "Amma", and with Jim, they took all the kids on many adventures like Tinkertown, the museum, golfing, the YMCA, a hot air balloon ride, and for sleepovers filled with too many treats and late nights.

Maureen lost her brave fight to cancer and passed in the arms of the love of her life. She has left her handprint on all of our hearts, and No One can ever replace the person that she was to us. She will be deeply missed every day, but with a smile we will treasure all the days that we were gifted by her unique presence.

Maureen received great care from the medical profession, especially Cancer Care. If anyone is considering a donation, please do so in her name to Cancer Care Manitoba.

Maureen was one of a kind.  As a young teacher I learned so much from her about life and balance.  She had an incredible essence about her; sense of humour, sense of style and so open and kind!  I felt great in her presence and I and I am so sorry to her family and friends at this devastating loss.  Our lives are better for having known her and the world is better because of her!

I am so saddened. Maureen was a huge part of my life. We navigated our adolescence together …. And then university and well into our twenties. She was my best friend for so many years. She was fun, spontaneous, smart, beautiful, honorable, and most of all, she was kind.  Lastly, Maureen was my Maid of Honor 41 years ago.   Our world lost someone very special…. It would be a better place if she were in it.  Jim….. I am so sorry.  Karen Rayter

My heart aches at the loss of this wonderful woman. My thoughts and prayers go out to all her family and friends, and especially to Jim and Erin. I’m glad to have had the chance to meet “Auntie Mo”, and know her, if only briefly.

My deepest condolences to Jim and to the larger community who loved her. I was lucky enough to be one of the Daughters of Darwin who spent many silly, joyous times together as young teachers, Maureen’s greatest accomplishment, I feel, was her ability to understand the essence of a meaningful life and invest her time in creating relationships with people whom she loved. I will really miss spending time with my beautiful friend!❤️

Ms. McCain was my teacher in Grade 1 and Grade 4. I have many memories of her reading stories, leading track practices, and taking no nonsense! My condolences for the loss of a wonderful person.  ❤

Mo, you were one of a kind.  I treasure the years that I enjoyed having you as a colleague at Darwin School.  You were a tremendous teacher, but you knew how to have fun too.  I'll also treasure the many tremendous staff parties with you and often at your house!  Jim, my heart goes out to you.  You lost a great companion way too early.  My sincere condolences! Jim, So sorry for your loss. This is your lady I believe I never met but the obituary certainly gave me a great picture. Always enjoyed your company and will be thinking of both of you. You both did a lot together and many different things. Great memories. Again, my thougghts are with you.

Jim and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Maureen was an amazing person and at every social event, she was the utmost hostess, and friend to all.❤

Jim, your tribute to Maureen is beautiful. I am feeling her loss enormously. I have been reflecting on how fortunate it was that you found one another and have had years together to make all the memories you will be cherishing now. Maureen was my hero the way she kept facing challenge after challenge without losing her positive attitude.  A great friend gone far too soon. Nancy Peerris-Singleton  (D.o.D)

Jim, I'm so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed working across the hall with Maureen for many years at Darwin School. I respected her calm and caring demeanor with her students. She will be very much missed.
