GLADYS YOUNG

April 6, 1926-February 22, 2026

With her entire family including grand-children and great grand-children present, Mom passed peacefully at the age of 99 years, just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

She leaves to celebrate her life, her son Ross and daughter in law Shelley. Grand-daughters Shauna (Sean) and Carla (Pat). Great grand-children Madison, Grace, Noah and Ben. She is pre-deceased by her husband John (Jack) Henry Young who passed on May 22, 1982. Mom was close with Jack’s brothers, sisters, and their spouses Jim (Doreen), Tom (Arline), Shelagh ( Don) Margaret (Ken) and many nieces and nephews.

Mom was adopted in Winnipeg at the age of seven months and spent her early years in Treherne, Manitoba later moving with her mother to Culross, Manitoba. At the age of 15 she moved into the city on her own and worked as a housekeeper for a Winnipeg family. Later she started work with Quinton’s and thereafter met her future sister-in-law who introduced her to John (Jack ) Young whom she married in 1950. In 1952 her only child Ross was born.

Mom also had a long career with Eatons and finished her working life with Metro Drugs. She enjoyed almost 34 years of retired life. Mom lost Jack when he was only 56. She faced life head on getting her driver’s licence when she was 60. Her first computer was purchased at age 75 and her second computer at age 85.

She was a survivor, persistent and persevered when life threw roadblocks in her way. After getting her licence she became the neighborhood “taxi” for all her friends shuttling them to various appointments. Mom made a point of travelling in her retirement and enjoyed multiple bus trips throughout North America.

She was a constant reminder that no matter how tough things may get, keep pushing forward and draw strength from those who love you. Although she was adopted as a baby, she left this world surrounded by a loving family and friends. We come into this world, leave it, and another child is born. How we live our lives is up to us. Mom, you did a great job. Thank you. We will love you forever.

We would like to thank the staff at River Park Gardens for the truly amazing care that they provided for over 3 years. A celebration of life will occur at a later date to be announced.

In Accordance with their wishes, cremation/burial has taken place and no formal service will be held.

I remember Gladys always had a smile and a very upbeat look on life. She had a great sense of humuor and could come out with the best one liners. She truly embodied the phrase bloom where you are planted. She will be missed but I know all of you have some beautiful memories.

Dear Ross and Shelley and family. So sorry to hear of the loss of Gladys. We have so many great memories of time spent with the Young family - all those Christmas Eve's and summer barbecues and other family events. Your mom brought a special something whenever she entered a room. She was so feisty, funny and kind - a wonderful person. Thinking of you - Yvonne and Harry

Gladys was more than a sister in law to me, she was also a dear friend. She always opened her home to me and my family when we got back to Winnipeg and I treasured her deeply. We spent many a long time on the phone yakking away with her in Winnipeg and myself here in Edmonton. Gladys you are so missed and loved. Kisses and hugs, shelagh

Great grandma was the most kind hearted person that I think I'll ever meet in my lifetime. Even at her age she always made the best one liners you could hear and it always made your day. Too be able to live as long as she did is a true accomplishment and I'm lucky I got to be able to spend as much time as I did with her. She was the soul heart of this family and I will always miss her.
