DAVID JAMES YUILL

The family of David (Dave) Yuill is heartbroken to announce his passing on the evening of Sunday, October 8 at the age of 84.

David is survived by his daughter Janna Remond (Alain), and sons Dan and Duncan (Peggy). He also leaves behind eight grandchildren (Stephen, Deanna, Amanda, Jaime, Lauren, Darby, Annika, and Grayson), six great-grandchildren (Nigel, Olivia, Jack, Rizzo, Arthur, and Louise), many friends, former co-workers and extended family members. Dave was predeceased by his wife Beverley in 2022, his parents James and Anne Yuill, and brothers Grenville and Ken.

After finishing high school, Dave landed a job with the Manitoba Telephone System (MTS). Joining MTS proved to be a decision that would help set the course of his life. It was there that he met his future partner and wife of nearly 62 years, Beverley Clarke. It was also through MTS that Dave and Bev made many cherished lifelong friends. He was a proud and dedicated employee for over 30 years until his retirement in 1996.

Though he had a long and successful career with MTS, Dave was defined by much more than his work. He was an avid sports fan and rarely missed watching the Bombers or Jets on TV. He also loved the outdoors and reveled in exploring the lakes and rivers of Manitoba and Ontario by canoe. There are few canoe routes in Manitoba that he didn’t paddle. One trip that stands out was up the Seal River in Northern Manitoba with his brother Gren, son Duncan and nephew Kevin. They travelled in cedar strip canoes that they built themselves to withstand the rugged adventure.

Another important part of Dave’s life was his volunteer work. He was not one to sit on the sidelines and would rather get involved. He was a long-time member of the Kinsmen Club and rose to serve a term as the District Governor. He served on the Boards of Agape Table, the Steinbach United Church and the Charleswood United Church. After his retirement, he volunteered with Hospice and Palliative Care providing companionship and support to those in need.

What we will remember most about Dave is his role as husband, father and grandfather. There was nothing more he loved than to be in the presence of his family. As a husband, he was loving and devoted. Whether it was flowers, gifts, a special treat or simply a few words, he was never shy to express his love. Perhaps the most loving act was his role as caregiver in the last few years of Bev’s life. He rarely left her side and made it his job to ensure that she was well cared for and comfortable to the end.

As a father and grandfather, he set the bar impossibly high. He was always there to help out or just have fun. Together we saw faraway places, sat by campfires, went skiing, and played golf. We built cottages, painted houses, rode on ferris wheels and roller coasters.

He was kind and thoughtful, and provided a reassuring presence that we will greatly miss. We are thankful for the many happy memories to carry us through.

A service of remembrance will take place at 11 a.m. on October 28, 2022, at Charleswood United Church (4820 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, MB).
