OTTO ZACHARIAS

October 21, 1938 - April 17, 2023

Peacefully on April 17, 2023 at the age of 84, Otto finished his final marathon. He leaves his loving wife Mary who was at his side until the very end, children Randy (Laura) their children Jesse, Shyle, Ben, Rachel, Jacob; Bonnie (Dave) their children Cody, Chase, Mikey, Ethan, Hailie, Caitlin; Veronica Gail (Bill) their children Jenessa, Zakk. Five great-grandchildren Bentley Stella Jake Ripley and Willa-Rose. He is survived by six sisters and one brother. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Bailey and many siblings waiting for him in heaven.

Otto was born on October 21, 1938 in the community of Bergfeld. He grew up on the family farm with his large family. Living on the farm taught him a strong work ethic which he maintained his entire life. Playing sports was a favourite pastime especially playing baseball with his brothers. The brothers played together for the Thames Tigers. Later on they had a team in Winnipeg also named The Tigers. He also played football and hockey until he was 69. A special memory is playing hockey with his son, daughter and grandson. He moved to Winnipeg as a young man and found his calling as a carpenter obtaining his journeyman ticket from Red River. He married his beautiful wife Mary on November 13, 1963. Shortly after, he built the first family home in Charleswood where they raised their family. He would go on to build three more houses for his family with the final being in West St Paul. He worked hard providing for the family and was known for being a hard worker in the building community. He worked together with his son for many years and always tried to out work him. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren especially when they were babies rocking them and humming them to sleep with his deep voice.

He semiretired at 65 and found his new hobby running marathons. He completed many full and half marathons with a highlight of finishing the full Manitoba Marathon first place in his age group at the age of 78. Running continued to be a big part of his life until he was about 81. People would often see him running down Henderson towards Lockport and ask how far he was going that day. He also spent a lot of time in the garden and would harvest tons of potatoes and other vegetables sharing his bountiful crop with family and donating to Winnipeg Harvest but not the potatoes.

He had a strong faith and his favourite Bible passage was Psalm 121.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at HSC high observation unit and the 5th floor at the Women’s Hospital. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to MCC or Heart and Stroke.

A private family celebration of life will be arranged at a later date.

On behalf of my family, I would like to extend our deepest and most sincere condolences. Otto was a quiet man and was always there for his family. He was not only a great father, but also an amazing grandfather. We hope you find some peace knowing he's at rest. Much love to all of you.

My memories of Uncle Ot are from family gatherings.  We were a large group, the Zacharias family and he always took a few moments to reach out to me.

I would like to give our sincere condolences to Mary & family. My husband, Larry Friesen, grew up with the Zacharias family, played ball with the them with the Thames Tigers, worked with them building houses in Wpg, and so many more memories he used to share with me. He would be so sad to hear of Otto's passing but his dementia prevents him from realizing this. But he would also be rejoicing  for Otto that he is with his Savior.

I had the great fortune to know Otto, we played hockey together and also ran many many miles together over the years. I will miss our runs and laughter we shared at Peguis Trail Health & Fitness Center.

I knew Otto from Peguis Trail Health & Fitness Center. He would spend hours running and visiting with his many friends. Over the years, we ran countless miles there. Otto like to compete on total distance run, I saw him often running on Henderson Highway. So sad to hear of his passing, but knowing Otto, he has found a pleasant place to run bountiful  miles.

Sometime in the 2000's, my husband Michael and I were tucking into brunch at one of our fav restaurant (Wiltons) and in walked Uncle Otto, Aunt Mary, Veronica and other family members.  "What are you folks doing here?"  I asked - "Dad and I just finished running the 1/2 marathon for the first time," answered Veronica.  I looked at my uncle and said "You crazy dude, good for you!" - He was a good solid man, a solid athelete and took up running with a lot of enthusiasm.  God bless you, and the family...Such a loss for us all

I have so many memories of Uncle Otto. From seeing him walking on the new barn roof on his hands, playing baseball with the greatest of skill and sportsmanship or watching him play football for the Steinbach Landmark Dutchman. I was fortunate enough to work with him for the summer of 1968 and his example taught  me how to work hard. I'm not sure how many years we played hockey together but it must be 15 or more and I never ever saw him take a shift off. It was 100 per cent effort every time. We ran numerous races together and he always beat me. Uncle Otto was and will always be leading the race. He's a very unique and special man. Rest in peace Otto.

So sorry for your loss. May you take comfort in your memories. Condolences to all.  I think of him when I walk in the neighbourhood and pass the family home that he built on Leahcrest.  Likely the best built house in the Maples!  It will now hold a special memory as the tie that brought our families together when we were neighbours. May he rest in peace. Nadine and Charlie Scholl
