REDSTON

NANCY REDSTON

February 10, 1963 – October 25, 2019

Nancy Redston paddled to the far shore on October 25, 2019 where her partner in life, Gordon Sumner (Vic) awaited her arrival, perhaps even cajoled her to paddle harder.

Nancy was a loving and devoted mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and relished her role as Grandma. She was an especially kind person whose only complaint ever was that it sucked to have cancer. Her childhood dream was to be a nurse. When she was laid off from assembly line work, a training allowance opened the opportunity to become a health care aid. She graduated with honours and then honoured the profession by providing genuine care and comfort to the residents at the Poseidon Care Centre. She had an extraordinary work ethic and loved her new career and community.

Nancy enjoyed sunning in Mexico with her sister Liz and exploring Ontario shorelines for beach glass with her cousin Margaret Rogers in Kingston. She valued meandering long distance conversations with her sister Jen.  After Gord (Vic) passed away in 2018, she valued the moral support and Indigenous wisdom Vic’s nephew Aaron Cardinell and his wife Deanna gave so lovingly. As a new widow, she appreciated her cousins Marcia and Kathy travelling from afar with an infusion of love.

She will be sorely missed by her family: children – Jonathan, Katie and son by another mother, David Sumner; son-in-law, Anthony Parker and granddaughter Victoria Rose; sisters - Elizabeth and Jennifer Redston and their families. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents John and Margaret (Finlay) Redston.

A celebration of life will be held Thursday, November 28, 2019 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent.

In memory of Nan, please consider donating to a charity that serves vulnerable children, of which there are many.

Our paddles keen and bright,

Flashing like silver;

Swift as the wild goose flight,

Dip, dip, and swing.
