WERNER WOLKE

* A Photo-Tribute is forthcoming, please check back soon*

WOLKE, Werner - WFP Photo_0001.jpg

Werner passed away at his home in Winnipeg on August 31, 2020 at the age of 76.

He leaves to mourn his passing sons Mark (Sherrie) and Jeff (Melissa) and grandsons Eoghan and Hayden, as well as his wife Mary and good friends Hans and Marita Rasing and Norman Frost. He is survived by his family in Germany:  sister Ruth and brothers Helmut and Jürgen along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Werner was born in Hötensleben, Germany on January 30th, 1944. In 1966 he emigrated to Canada and came to Winnipeg, where he met and married Mary Iverson in 1968. As their family grew, Werner worked at several places, including up in the Northwest Territories, at the Manitoba Sugar plant and eventually at the University of Manitoba. He retired several years ago. He enjoyed gardening and always had something growing in the back yard. He was also an enthusiastic cyclist and walker and was a familiar sight in his Wolseley neighbourhood. Riding his bike or walking through the area, he came in contact with many people and always offered a friendly greeting.

Werner was a very talented man and could repair or build almost anything. He did several renovations to his home as well as at the trailer in Camp Neustadt, where the family passed many happy summers. He was very generous with his time and would help anyone who requested it. He was a member of the German Society of Winnipeg for 50 years and served as Lagerleiter at Camp Neustadt for several years, keeping everything in top shape with his expert maintenance.

In keeping with Werner’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private celebration of his life will be held. Werner’s ashes will be returned to Germany when conditions allow. In the meantime, his family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages anyone who wishes to make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Werner’s name.

Rest in Peace. You will be greatly missed!
