TYSON “TY” MICHAEL YAKEL

December 24, 1981 – October 9, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tyson at the young age of 41. With family and close friends at his bedside, Tyson reached the end of his journey on October 9th, 2023 at St. Boniface Hospital. He leaves to mourn daughter Deanna; father William; brother Trevor (Keri); nephews Hayden and Desmond; aunt Norma (Douglas); uncles Marc (Brenda), David (Janice), and Douglas (Lorraine); and many cousins and friends. Tyson was predeceased by grandfather Peter, mother Diana, grandfather William, grandmother Emma, stepmother Wanda, and grandmother Pearl.

Tyson grew up in the Elmwood community of Winnipeg, M.B. but spent much of his youth at the family cabin in Whiteshell Provincial Park. His passion for the outdoors began at a young age and was fostered through many family fishing and hunting adventures. Family was important to Tyson. Soon after learning his older brother was diagnosed with a chronic disease, he offered to be a living donor when the time came. Even though that time didn’t come during Tyson’s life, the offer will forever be cherished.

The family offers their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the St. Boniface Hospital ICU. Tyson was treated with the utmost dignity and respect during such difficult circumstances. The care and compassion he received is much appreciated.

A celebration of life will be planned for the spring of 2024. Location and details to be distributed later.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Moms Stop the Harm (MSTH). MSTH is a network of Canadian families impacted by substance-use-related harms and deaths and advocate for the change of failed drug policies, provide peer support to grieving families, and assist those with loved ones who use or have used substances.
